-LuckyDay Service Learning Grant--LuckyDay students worked on a grant for math and science and Hawkins was awarded the $2500 grant!

-After school Drama & Dance Clubs celebrating academic success. Dance Club members going to the ballet on Friday and a trip to New Stage Theater in Jackson in the spring.

“America Reads Mississippi is dedicated to improving the reading
skills of students, encouraging public awareness and support of
literacy, and helping to increase the number of certified teachers in
Mississippi.” In August, Neighbors @ Hawkins partnered with America
Reads Mississippi to hire three full-time tutors to work at Hawkins
Elementary. This week we started in-school tutoring with 46 1st-3rd
graders in reading! These 46 students will receive an additional four
hours of specialized tutoring a week! Four hours a week!! We’re
excited and looking forward to a great year ahead!! As as always...
volunteers are welcomed!!

MENTOR INTEREST MEETING

Sunday, Sept. 26 join us at either 4:30pm or 7pm in the chapel at Court Street UMC for an interest meeting in mentoring a child. You can make a huge difference by connecting with a child individually at least once every other week & once a month is a group gathering of mentors and children.

Hi Neighbor! Thanks for expressing an interest in serving with Neighbors at Hawkins!
We’ve been working with the students and faculty at Hawkins Elementary for just over a year now. We have made lots of progress and seen several changes, but there’s still a lot of work that we could use your help with.

Hattiesburg is truly a fascinating city, home to two major universities and several junior colleges within reach. Unfortunately, for many of the students we encounter on a daily basis, without intervention the university up the road will actually be beyond their reach.
Partnering with volunteers like you, we can make an impact today for a brighter future tomorrow.
Here’s what I need from you: TIME. Email me with the time frames within your schedule that you’re open and where you’re interested in serving. There are several opportunities to tutor, read to kindergarten classes, help a teacher grade papers, or just to talk with kids about life.

Here’s how it works:
Example: My name is Aaron Robinson and I’m open Tuesday 1pm-3pm or Wednesday 11am-2pm. I’d like to assist a teacher.

I will then look at the teacher request sheets for those two time slots and get back to you! Simple!
How much time do you have to offer… 1-2 hours a week or 30 minutes during your lunch break? We’ll take it!
If you know a time that you’re, free contact me; but if you have an open hour, remember, walk-ins are welcomed!

Lunch Duty at Hawkins

A constant request from the teachers is that someone (or group of

people) might come and sit with their kids during lunch. At Hawkins

the teachers eat with the students, which makes for a well behaved

lunch, but leaves the teachers with no time to themselves throughout

the day.

The first lunch period happens about 11:00 and the last one ends by

1:00. So, if you are interested in giving a teacher a break during the

day while helping them maintain some order in the cafeteria, then let us know

and we will plug you in. If you are interested in doing something else

keep your eyes on the page listed to the right for more opportunities.

drop those box tops off at our Sunday Meetings. of contact Sarah if you want to turn some in for the school.
